Cancer survivors are being invited to go along to Buchanhaven Hearts Social Club in Peterhead to register for this year’s Relay for Life.
The annual fundraiser is heading towards another record-breaking year, and will be held on July 4 and 5 at the town’s Catto Park.
Survivors are being invited to the social club on Tuesday, May 26, at 7pm and are asked to wear their CRUK t-shirts and bring a quote for the ‘Heroes of Hope’ wall, which will be displayed in the marquee and also on screen during the Candle of Hope ceremony on the evening of July 4.
One such survivor, who will be attending this year’s relay, is Peterhead woman Morag Walker.
On October 29, 2014 Morag was diagnosed with breast cancer, the devastating news that she never expected to hear.
Morag told the Buchanie: “That day changed my life forever; all I could think about was my children, husband and family.
“My daughter Leah turned 13 the day after I was diagnosed and my son Harrison is only 15 and my oldest son Connor is now 20.
“I had my operation on November 29, a double mastectomy then was told three weeks later the tumour was two-inches in size.
“The next step was chemotherapy once every three weeks with a total of six sessions which I have just completed.
“Chemotherapy has had a massive impact on my appearance, I have lost my hair and with all my medication am very bloated and when I look in the mirror I see a completely different person which is really hard to deal with.
“My next step is radiotherapy every day for three weeks which I will be starting soon.”
Morag said she has had massive support from her husband Johnny.
“ He has been there for me every step of the way; also our kids have been amazing and shouldn’t need to have to deal with all this.
“My mum and dad have helped me so much and my friends have been great too.
“I’ve met in with some amazing new friends on the journey and have formed a strong friendship; we will always be there for one another.
I have always been public about my experiences as it might help other people in the future.
“I hope my story helps to raise awareness to other people and help people realise how important it is to catch it early, as so much can be done.”
