CREATIVE pupils at Peterhead Academy have launched their very own news operation.
The brand new ‘Press Gang’ have been news gathering within the school and writing articles as part of an initiative to publicise the good work going on within the Academy.
Headed up by fifth year pupil Ishbel McLaughlan, the team includes pupils from all year groups who have expressed an interest in writing and journalism.
Teacher Laura Gauld, who is also the school’s Press Officer, said: “There are many talented pupils at Peterhead Academy both academically and in extra-curricular events and personal lives that should be shared.”
“There is so much good work going on at Peterhead Academy and we want to publicise it.”
The team will be writing for the school’s newsletter as well as making contributions to The Buchanie.
Laura added: “We have different pupils linked up to different faculties in order to reach all staff and pupils in the school. Ishbel is going to be our editor and will be overall in charge of the team.”
Ishbel (16) hopes to carve a career in media when she leaves school and is looking forward to a two week summer placement with a London based broadcaster.
She said: “The Press Gang have been meeting weekly at lunchtimes. We want to find out what is going on within the school and publicise what everyone is doing. So far we have written about one of the fourth year girl’s in a cross country race and awards for H.E.”
The pupils have also been learning to use a newly installed school radio system and hope to develop this further in the coming months.
