A Peterhead community group is urging the public to stay safe with two new campaigns as the winter nights close in.

The Buchan Community Safety Group are promoting the use of bike lights and personal safety alarms in time for the clocks turning back next Sunday.

Anne Allan, Councillor for Peterhead North and Rattray, said: “The Safety Group is aware that with the clocks changing next weekend that the nights are drawing in and people need to be seen and be safe.

“So we’re promoting bike lights as reflectors are not enough.”

Sandy Allan, Buchan Community Safety Group Chairperson, said: “Bike lights can be purchased for as cheap as £10, front and back.”

He added: “They can be bought from any local bike shop.”

Also being promoted alongside bike lights were the use of personal safety alarms.

Councillor Allan said: “For people who are out and about on their own who feel vulnerable a personal safety alarm is the answer.

“It gives a bit of protection and it sounds an audible alarm if tampered with.”

The personal safety alarms are on sale at Buchan House and can be bought for £2.50.
