Work at the Landale Road Gardens site has picked up the pace thanks to a number of volunteers dedicating their spare time to help out.

The gardens have been tidied up and the ‘Here For You’ partnership will receive the first batch of plants ready for planting in the next two weeks.

The Peterhead Morrisons store will provide sandwiches for volunteers as they strive to get the gardens back to their former glory.

Morrisons Community Champion, Sheena Irvine, said: “We are delighted to support the gardens project and will support the volunteers by providing sandwiches for all the great work they are doing.”

The project has seen an increase in interest by local residents looking to get involved.

One volunteer, Sanda Woolner said: “I am originally from Latvia but I moved here after I married my husband.

“I heard about the initiative in the Buchan Observer and I went on the Facebook group page and asked if they needed an extra pair of hands.

She added: “For me it is important to help as the people of Scotland have been very generous to me since I have been here so I want to give something back.

“After some photos were uploaded to the group page last week, there was a great response from people looking to become volunteers.”

Fellow volunteer Fiona Chalmers said: “The gardens are really starting to progress and most of the hard work is nearly done thanks to the number of volunteers and helpers we have had here.

“The best part is coming up when we will get the plants, so all the work will soon come into fruition.

“It is good to see such a great response and that people have been giving up their time to help such a great project.

Fiona added: “I am really looking forward to summer so we can see the plants come to life which will really help to change the gardens.

“Hopefully people will come down and make the most of it like they used to.”
