BUCHAN area councillors will be asked today (Tuesday) to delcare Strichen Town House surplus to requirements.

At a meeting of the Buchan area committee in Peterhead, members will also be asked to instruct officers to report back to committee within six months on the outcome of discussions with Strichen Community Council on transfer of ownership of the building.

If, after six months, the community council is unable to formulate a satisfactory proposal for the transfer of the building for continued community use, it will be placed on the open market for sale.

Councillors will hear that any disposal would include in the terms of sale a requirement that repair works be carried out within a stipulated timescale and sanctions that would apply in the event of default.

In a report to today’s meeting, members will hear that the town house is a grade A listed building within the centre of a conservation area.

The ground floor is used by Strichen Community Council for occasional meetings but the upper floor can no longer be used because of infestation of the structural timbers with wet and dry rot.

It is suggested that a six month delay in the proposed marketing should be sufficient time to allow Strichen Community Council to come to a conclusion on any proposed future use of the building.
