Aberdeenshire Council have begun to remove waste dumped by travellers at Aikey Brae near Old Deer.

On Friday, August 30 a local authority clean-up team arrived on-site with heavy machinery and a lorry to clear away rubbish which included garden waste, gas cannisters, old fridges and sofas.

Such was the extent of the dumping that the work continued for several days. The Aikey Brae site has been earmarked as an official stopover site for travellers by the council, despite massive ongoing opposition from local residents.

Officers from Police Scotland were recently called to the scene after a man was reported to have brandished a metal pole and damaged a caravan.
