North East MSP Richard Baker has raised concerns over a lack of support from the Scottish Government for the Scottish Prison Service in light of security breaches at HMP Grampian.

Mr Baker asked what discussions the Scottish Government has had with the governor and other management at HMP Grampian regarding the security breaches at the prison and, in light of these incidents, whether it will provide the prison with additional support.

The answer received simply passed the buck to the chief executive of the Scottish Prison Service and provided no information on any discussions with the Scottish Government.

Mr Baker said:“From Mr MacAskill’s answer it would appear that the Scottish Government have not had any discussions with the prison service on this very serious issue.

“This is astounding given the serious nature of the disorder at HMP Grampian and is an abdication of responsibility if true. The Cabinet Secretary cannot simply wash his hands of these major problems.

“The Scottish Government spent millions of pounds on this new super prison and it is in everyone’s interest that they ensure that it operates in an efficient and more importantly safe manner.”
