A local couple recently celebrated their Diamond wedding anniversary marking 60 years together.

Robert and Mary Cooper of Peterhead married on April 10, 1954 at the town’s Methodist Church.

Mary, who will turn 82 in June, told the Buchanie she met Robert, 85, at Butlins in Ayr when she was just 18 and he was 21.

She said: “It was love at first sight and I just thought he was the one for me. It has been a very happy 60 years.”

Mary was born and raised in Peterhead but Robert made the move north from Alloa, near Stirling.

The couple have lived in Peterhead for all of their married life and have a daughter, Morag, and son Gordon as well as three grandchildren; Ross, Craig and Liam.

Sadly Robert and Mary’s fourth grandchild Graham passed away.

During their time in Peterhead, Mary enjoyed a varied career including work at a local dentist, book keeper and serving dinners at Buchanhaven, Clerkhill and Meethill schools, while Robert worked as an engineer at General Motors.

The couple celebrated their anniversary by having a meal with 45 family and friends on Saturday, April 12 at the Waterside Inn.

Councillor Tom Malone visited Robert and Mary to present them with flowers and a bottle of whisky on behalf of Aberdeenshire Council.
