Staff and residents at Abbey Court in Mintlaw were delighted to officially open their new assisted bathroom recently.

Thanks to fundraising support from the Hutchison family, an unused storage space was transformed into a new bathroom for the residents.

The project was started by Shirley Hutchison and her family who aimed to raise £4,000 to install the bathroom as a way of thanking Abbey Court for caring for her father-in-law Ian.

In just six months they had reached a total of £5,688.15.

The Hutchinsons held a fundraising open day in their home last May and a fantastic £1,771.65 was raised.

There was a nine month delay getting the bathroom completed due to a manufacturing issue with the hoist, but because the ceiling tracks had already been purchased and installed, all they could do was wait.

After the project was completed, over £2,000 was put into the tenant amenity fund which will help to pay for days out, activities and much needed extras for the residents at Abbey Court.

Staff at Abbey Court are extremely grateful to Shirley and her family as they would never have been able to take on such a huge project on their own.

They would also like to thank the Central Buchan Rotary, Abbey Court tenants and their families, Wood Group, Pink Rose, ASCO, Nirvana Spa, Total E and P UK, Keith Lodge Masona, Clyde Platform, Dippity Doo Dah Bears, Laurian Flooring, Accordion Club, Castlehill and Aberdeenshire Council for their donations.

Speaking at the bathroom’s grand opening on Friday, March 4, Shirley said: “It is absolutely beautiful and it will make such a calm and relaxing room for residents and they can light a few candles and put on some music while they enjoy some bubbles in the bath.”

Husband Neil added: “It will be somewhere for residents to enjoy, relax and pamper themselves.

“It looks superb.”
