North East MSP Christian Allard has praised the work of Lab in a Lorry during a visit of the mobile science laboratory to Mintlaw Academy recently.
The MSP spoke of the importance of getting students interested in science and engineering through hands-on experiments that they experience at the Lab.
Lab in a Lorry was founded in 2004 and is a partnership between the Institute of Physics, OPITO, the Scottish Government and the Schlumberger Foundation with support from the Rank Prize Funds, ConocoPhillips and Marathon.
Mr Allard commented: “Lab in a Lorry is a fantastic opportunity for young people to come and learn about science and engineering. It is a particularly useful tool for demonstrating how these technical subjects can be appealing to girls as well as boys.
“Many of the students I met were very enthusiastic and it was great to see them thinking positively about a future in a scientific discipline.
“The energy sector in the North East is booming and as a result there is currently a skills shortage. Initiatives like this mobile lab will inspire students to think about a career in science and engineering and help provide the industry with a stronger local skills base.
“I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the staff and volunteers that are making this project a success.”
