A new initiative has been launched in Aberdeenshire to stop residents and visitors falling foul of their most loyal friends.

Aberdeenshire Council has signed up to the Green Dog Walkers scheme, a community-led programme to reduce dog fouling across the region.

Local dog walkers are being encouraged to sign up as Green Dog Walkers (GDW).

The voluntary role is part of a wider partnership with community councils and groups which encourages walkers to be more responsible about clearing up after their dogs.

Green Dog Walkers’ dogs can wear a green collar to show that they have signed the Green Dog Walkers Pledge.

The pledge states that the walker will always clean up after their dog, they are happy to be approached to give a spare dog waste bag to those without and be a friendly reminder to other dog walkers to clean up after their dogs.

Aberdeenshire Council is also providing a Green Dog Walkers tool kit to each community organisation which becomes an official GDW group.

The tool kit will include a supply of pledge brochures, dog collars, green doggy bags, posters and lanyards.

Cllr Allison Grant has been involved locally publicising the scheme in Insch and the surrounding area.

She said: “By becoming a Green Dog Walker, you will be an ambassador for good practice and encourage others to only leave paw prints behind them.”

“By working hand-in-hand together with local communities I am sure we can wipe out the instances of dog fouling from Aberdeenshire.

Chairman of Aberdeenshire Council’s Infrastructure Services Committee, Cllr Peter Argyle, said: “Aberdeenshire Council’s dog wardens work hard to educate the public on responsible pet ownership.

“Green Dog Walkers have the power to add to their efforts and change attitudes about dog fouling in Aberdeenshire in a positive and friendly way.

“If just a few people change their behaviour then it will make a real difference to the amount of waste on the ground.”
