Aberdeenshire East MSP Alex Salmond has written to staff at the Mintlaw and Central Buchan Initiative (MACBI) Community Hub to congratulate them on receiving £10,000 from the Communities and Families Fund.

The long-awaited sport and community centre, which has a fitness suite, all weather-pitch, exercise classes and an activity programme for children, officially opened earlier this month.

The money will be used to refurbish the centre’s new ‘family space’ which will provide on-site crèche and soft-play facilities for young children.

The space will provide a place for children and parents to play together as well as allowing parents a safe place to leave their children while accessing other service’s at the centre.

The Communities and Families Fund has £4.5 million from the Scottish Government and £1.5 million from the Big Lottery Fund and offers grassroots projects the chance to apply for funding between £250 and £10,000.

Mr Salmond said: “The centre is a brilliant community asset and by developing childcare facilities, even more people will be able to take advantage of all the fitness classes and other facilities at the centre.

“Volunteers have worked tirelessly for more than 10 years to turn the idea behind MACBI into a reality and it is great to see so many people enjoying sport in their local community.”
