LONGSIDE Gala will be changing format this year after the introduction of strict new licensing rules.
The gala, which stages a hugely-popular marquee disco on the Saturday night, will be making the event an over 18s event in a bid to stamp out under-age drinking and anti-social behaviour.
Thursday night’s concert will remain the same and a family race night will take place in the licensed marquee on the Friday. But Saturday night’s live band and disco is strictly for adults in an effort to reduce bad behaviour and to attract more villagers to the event.
Family games will still take place on Friday night as well as the Saturday gala day hosting all of the usual events.
There will be a modest entry fee at the gate on Saturday this year to try and sustain the viability of the gala, while Sunday will remain as normal.
The gala committee ie hoping to recruit more people to help set up and tidy up at the end, and feels that some new ideas are needed for the gala so if anyone is interested they are asked to call 01779 821744.
All tickets purchased for Saturday’s dance must be by patrons aged over 18 as ID will be required before entry to venue. There will be no refund to anyone refused entry.
Councillor Norman Smith added: “We had a very constructive meeting with the Police, Grampian Security, and Gala committee.
“We also invited along some of the younger people in the village who would be affected with the change but unfortunately they did not attend.
“The thinking behind the change is to address underage and drinking, though, of course, things may change in future years if we feel the problem can be addressed.”
