THREE friends are preparing to climb Machu Picchu in Peru later this year in aid of charity.
Scott Stephen, Sandra Morgan and Demi Brown are doing the climb in support of T.E.A.C.H - Time to Educate Africa’s Children which hopes to alleviate poverty through the aid of education.
Scott originally heard about the climb through friends at university and after seeing it on Facebook, he decided to sign up.
Demi and Sandra signed up after reading about it on Scott’s Facebook page with Demi adding: “We saw it and said ‘we should do that!’”
They nearly missed their chance after initial registration had closed as Sandra explained: “We decided to do it and sign up but the first registration had closed. It was opened again because a couple of people had dropped out so we went for it.”
They each have to raise £2150 in order to do the climb and have so far planned a fundraising Night at the Races which will be held at Buchanhaven Hearts Football Club on Saturday, March 9.
They are also planning other events including a bake sale, waxing and possibly a fish slap.
The trio will be part of a team of around 20 people who will be climbing for T.E.A.C.H.
They have begun training for the climb by visiting the gym as well as swimming and running.
Scott, Sandra and Demi are all excited but nervous about the climb although Scott is concerned about one particular thing: “I don’t think I’m prepared for it yet, especially the altitude, I don’t want to get altitude sickness.”
The trio will be leaving for the trek on August 19 and will head home on September 3.
After completing the climb, the group will have four spare days to relax and Sandra has already looked at briefly visiting Brazil.
