A LOCAL musician is looking to enter the iTunes top 40 Singer/Songwriter chart after the release of his debut single.

Ian Burnett’s track, Stand Strong, was released on Monday, March 4 and is his first official download release.

Ian, 23, is currently in his final months at Aberdeen College where he is studying Music.

He decided to follow music after being influenced by live gigs.

Speaking to the Buchanie, Ian said: “I want to promote the North-east music scene and show people that there are local bands up here and they don’t all come from Glasgow or bigger cities.”

Speaking about his feelings towards the single release he said: “I am quite anxious but at the same time I want to be recognised as another musician from the area like Sandi Thom and Emeli Sande.”

Ian admits the song writing process isn’t as simple as some might think: “Sometimes it can take ten minutes but other times I can start a song and leave it in a notebook for two months and it will just sit.

“I don’t see the point in forcing a song but sometimes the best ideas will come at two in the morning but I realise I can’t wake anybody up so it has to be put on hold.”

Ian perfoms as a solo artist at smaller intimate gigs but says he likes to get his band together for larger gigs: “We had our first proper gig at Drummond’s in Aberdeen on Thursday night. My band are session players from College.”

Not only was the single written and performed by Ian, he also recorded it in his bedroom.

Looking to the future, Ian will be SHMU radio’s Artist of the Week in April and he hopes he can take music on as a full time profession but he added: “I’m not concerned about superstardom, I just want to spread a following around the area.”
