Young mum proves it’s possible to reach academic dream

MUM of two, Cherith Chamberlain (24), celebrated successfully combining the responsibilities of parenthood, marriage and study when she collected her degree from Robert Gordon University recently.

The former Mintlaw Acdemy pupil, who now lives in Pitmedden, graduated with a Masters in Pharmacy degree with distinction in a morning ceremony held within His Majesty’s Theatre.

Cherith first decided she wanted to pursue a career in pharmacy at 14 years old while was studying at Mintlaw. Her plans to begin her university studies directly after school were delayed when she unexpectedly became pregnant shortly before her 18th birthday.

Anise was born in December 2006. Stephen - Anise’s father - and Cherith got married the following September, only two weeks before she began at RGU.

At the end of Cherith’s first year, she and Stephen decided that Anise would like a sibling for company. She fell pregnant at the beginning of her second year, which proved hugely challenging for her as she struggled with extreme exhaustion. However she managed to complete the year, sitting her end of year exams just two weeks before her due date. That summer she gave birth to Harriett who was delivered by Cherith’s older sister and midwife, Lauren.

Returning after a gap year spent with the family’s new arrival, Cherith juggled the various aspects of her life with refreshed determination to complete her degree.

Cherith continued: “A major highlight of the last five years has definitely been finding out I had passed my Masters with distinction. I think the challenges I have faced only prove that I am determined to be successful in my future career and I hope that I can make my husband and children proud.”

Cherith will now begin her pre-registration training in Peterhead at Webster’s Pharmacy. She aims to become a community pharmacist.
