Young homeless people learn new skills

Aberdeenshire Council has contracted social firm Foyer Works to carry out property maintenance within council homes in Buchan and in areas of Banff and Buchan.

Foyer Works creates jobs for disadvantaged young people and is operated by charity Aberdeen Foyer.

The enterprise provides a property maintenance service to housing associations, private clients, voluntary organisations and neighbouring local authority, Aberdeen City Council.

A base has recently been set up in Fraserburgh after the firm secured a contract to carry out work for Aberdeenshire Council and as a result has recruited a supervisor and four young people as trainees to work on projects throughout Aberdeenshire.

Workers have already been busy on various projects helping council tenants with wallpaper removal, shed clearances and garden maintenance.

Aberdeen Foyer's commercial director Leona McDermid said: "Foyer Works has already supported several young people into work in Aberdeen and it has always been our aim to set up a team in the north.

"A combination of the work from Aberdeen City Council, the Future Jobs Fund and sponsorship from Exxon Mobil has made this possible and as a result we already have five people into work in a sustainable business that has potential for growth."

Chairman of Aberdeenshire Council's Social Work and Housing Committee Councillor Gurudeo Saluja said: "I am heartened to see Aberdeenshire Council working closely with such a worthwhile social enterprise that is helping young homeless people gain valuable skills to carry them into the workplace and out of deprivation."

Foyer Works property maintenance service includes a removals service, cleaning, Portable Appliance Testing (PAT), painting and decorating, basic joinery, repairs, maintenance and external cleaning.

The initiative offers training and short term paid work leading to the possibility of employment with local companies.
