Winds cause huge damage to Ship Lift

Ship Lift, Peterhead.

A huge section of the Ship Lift in Peterhead has been damaged by gale-force winds which hit the North-east.

The damage was caused by wind pressure during the early hours of Tuesday September 25 (today).

The severe weather caused block work to pull down a section of cladding, measuring 11 metres high by 18 metres wide, to the rear of the building. The debris landed in the void between Bridge Street and the Ship Lift.

No-one was injured as a result of the incident and works have since continued in the Ship Lift.

Commenting on the situation, Peterhead Port Authority Chief Executive John Wallace said: “The most important thing is that no-one was hurt.

“We have specialists working on the job at the moment. I think it is still too early to know how much the repairs will cost but we are in discussions with our insurers.

“We will be installing new ventilation to the building in the coming months so it may be that repair work could happen at the same time as those renovations.”
