A Peterhead fish factory boss has praised Banff and Buchan MP Dr Eilidh Whiteford for helping rebuild his business.

The Mapco fish processing plant was crippled by storms 18 months ago and owner Nasar Rashid has said the SNP politician played a big part in the building of a new facility.

Mr Rashid said: “When you go directly to an MP they have an established network of contacts that they can share with you and this was crucial for us to be able to got Mapco back on it’s feet.

“I invited Dr Whiteford along to see the factory now that it is operating again as a kind of thankyou.

“It was important she got to see what we actually do here - it’s hard to imagine when you describe what Mapco is about.”

Mr Rashid and his team dry fish as a cheap source of protein which is then sold in Africa.

The reopening of Mapco has brought about 30 new jobs in the harbour.

Dr Whiteford said: “It’s just great to see Mapco back on the map - it’s an important part of the production chain here at Peterhead harbour.

“Mapco is vital to the waste management strategy of the wide fishing industry and in that way it helps everyone here at the port.”

The Mapco processing factory at Gerrie’s Yard on Keith Kinch was flattened by fierce storms in December 2012.
