Theatre Modo at the Youth Circus in London
Five youngsters from Peterhead and Mintlaw had the chance to take part in the exciting National Youth Circus Event at Circus Space in London with Theatre Modo recently.
The trip was richly-deserved as all five have shown great talent and real commitment during their time with Modo.
Starting at school they have progressed from being participants to volunteering and passing on their skills to others. Gary Hackett, Ellie Moore, Jordan Wilson, Charleigh Howie and Ciaran Salter-Lewens all travelled down with Modo’s artistic director, Martin Danziger, for an amazing weekend of circus education.
NYCE was a fantastic opportunity to meet other young people and professionals from all over the country.
They saw circus at its best and are now determined to improve their own skills and train up others in their local communities.

Among the new skills they learned during the two days of workshops were the German Wheel, unicycling, trapeze and tightwire.
One of the participants, keen stilter Jordan Wilson (15) a student at Peterhead Academy, said: “Circus Space London was like no other trip I’ve been on.
“It was an experience I will never forget – I met new friends I will always have and I accomplished things I never thought I had the ability to do. Thank you Theatre Modo for it all!”
Jordan is keen to develop a wide range of skills and has begun planning workshops to improve skills, setting new routines and passing on the skills to others.
He is keen to teach the young ones and those who have never tried circus skills before. Along with support from Modo and fellow volunteers he hopes to have a weekly workshop up and running in Peterhead very soon. That’s good news for young people in town and as well as being great fun they will learn transferable skills which will stand them in good stead for the future.
A relative talking about the weekend added: “It’s a great opportunity for them. There’s nothing much in Peterhead for the teenagers. Thank goodness for Modo and all its helpers who give up their own time to work and play.”
Also on the trip was Ellie Moore (14) a student at Mintlaw Academy. Already a talented juggler Ellie said: “For a lot of the workshops we had to work in partners with people from other youth circuses so we got to make friends and meet lots of new people.
“After that we split up and did different workshops. I did juggling, contact juggling, wall running and unicycling, all of which were really fun and I’d never done them before.
“Apart from the amazing workshops there was also a chance to perform in a cabaret and we all got to see Cirque du Soleil’s new 3D film.
“Now that we’re back in Aberdeenshire we can’t wait to teach everyone what we have learned! We all had a great weekend and learned loads of new skills and tried things we never thought we’d get to.”
Modo would like to thank Community Learning & Development Central Buchan for their support and financial contribution towards the trip.
