Pupils from a Peterhead primary school took part in a mock election recently.

Primary 6B pupils from Buchanhaven School voted as part of a project they have been working on this term called ‘Making Scotland Better’.

Following a tour around Peterhead, the schoolchildren identified three key areas for improvement in the town: parks, the town centre and public services.

The schoolchildren then formed their own political parties, wrote their own manifestos and made party political broadcasts as part of the project. Pupils from primary 5, 6 and 7 got the chance to vote in the election.

The winning party was announced at an assembly last Friday, with Sunshine Shops claiming victory.

During the last eight weeks the pupils have learned about devolution and the Scottish Parliament.

The class were also visited by Elections Officer, Robert McGregor, who even brought with him a ballot box which was used in the school’s polling station.

Commenting, class teacher Miss Lynsey Hutcheson said: “The children have been really enthusiastic. They have shown that children’s ideas can often be better than adults’ ideas! Everyone has worked very hard and they worked well in their teams.”
