A North-east school cook has retired after over three decades in the job.

Jan Buchan, who has been been a cook at Peterhead’s Meethill School for 34 years, retired last week.

To commemorate her many years of service, Aberdeenshire Council put on a special afternoon tea, in which 60 former colleagues attended. During the tea, Jan was presented with vouchers and flowers.

Jan’s 34 years at Meethill School have earned her the title as the longest-serving cook in Aberdeenshire. As well as lunches and other catering needs at Meethill School, Jan also provided lunches at Boddam and Burnhaven primary schools.

Commenting, Head Teacher Elaine Philip said: “We really appreciate all the work Jan has done over the years. She has supported Meethill School extremely well and she will be missed by everyone.

“We wish her all the best for her retirement,” she added.

Jackie Thomas, who is chairperson of the Parent Council at Meethill School, added: “Jan has supported the school all these years and attended events in her own time. She is also heavily involved with the Brownies.”

Commenting on her retirement, Jan said: “I will miss the kids. I’ve really enjoyed my years working here and seen a lot of changes over the years. It is always good to see the kids enjoying their meals.

“I’m looking forward to my retirement very much,” she added.
