Rugby lads ‘Tackle it for Daniel’

BIG-hearted Blue Toon rugby players have added a message of support on their new strip for a seriously-injured teammate.

In a show of support for Daniel Gallagher, the player who suffered horrific injuries in an accident earlier this year, the words “Tackle It For Daniel” have been printed on the sleeves of the shirts sponsored by Inmarsat.

In April, while on a tour with the rugby club on the Isle of Arran, Daniel was struck by a police van responding to an emergency call. As he battled for his life, doctors had to amputate both his legs.

Since then, brave Daniel has been recuperating in hospital in Glasgow, but returned briefly for the first time to the North-east at the weekend to take in a match between his Peterhead rugby side and Dyce.

The idea behind the “Tackle It For Daniel’ iniative came from a member of Daniel’s family.

Since the accident, Daniel’s family and the wider community in Peterhead have taken part in a number of fundraising events including quizzes, a dance and even a mankini swim.

Fraser Macfarlane, who has been vice-captain of Peterhead Rugby Club for the last two years, commented: “I’ve been friends with Daniel for at least two years and it is great to be able to join in the fundraising.

“We are delighted about the new sponsorship deal. It will make such a big difference.

A Sportsmen’s Dinner is being planned for November to raise more money for Daniel. The organisers of the event already have signed shirts from the Scottish, English and Edinburgh rugby teams to be auctioned.

Fraser said: “We are looking forward to the Sportsmen’s Dinner and we are also hoping to put on a non-rugby auction so that people outside the rugby community can take part as well. The entire community is supporting Daniel. I know his family are incredibly grateful.

“The accident definitely brought the club closer together.”
