Rock and roll on as academy team steal more prizes

The Peterhead Rock Challenge team won two national awards.

The Peterhead Rock Challenge team won two national awards.

The success of the Peterhead Rock Challenge was recognised as the team snapped up two national awards earlier this month.

Named as winners in the Artwork and Stage Crew categories, the team were also nominated for five other gongs.

The Rock Challenge is a series of performing arts events which promote healthy life choices.

Thousands of young people across the UK take part every year and, if they are successful, progress to the Scottish, Northern or Southern Grand Finals.

This year Peterhead Academy’s piece ‘Taken’, based on the story of the Pied Piper, notched up seven nominations: Stage Use, Set Design and Function, Costuming Character, Entertainment, Artwork, Stage Crew and Scene of the Year.

Results were announced online on Wednesday, July 9 and Peterhead were selected as National Award winners for Artwork and Stage Crew.

Along with the announcement of the stage crew award, Rock Challenge UK wrote: “Peterhead’s stage crew have been chosen due to the magnitude and complexity of set movement throughout their performance, which was not purely for aesthetical reasons, but necessary for scene changes and to hide entrances and exits of performers.

“The set movement was linked with the choreography which meant any mistake would have had huge implications on the performance as a whole.

“The stage crew had a good understanding of the scenery and how best to manipulate it.

“They carried out their roles perfectly and were an exceedingly well-organised and hardworking team.”

The stage crew have proven themselves consistently as award winners over the past few years having won the Iain Alley Stage Crew Award in Aberdeen 2014, the award for Best Stage Crew at Northern Premier Finals in 2011, 2013 and 2014, the award for Best Stage Crew at the National Final in 2012 and now winning the National Nomination award for Stage Crew in 2014.

Peterhead Academy Rock Challenge are now in the planning stage of the 2015 Rock Challenge performance.
