Road closure call after serious accident

Calls have been made for a busy Peterhead thoroughfare to be closed to traffic at weekends following a car accident which left a 24-year-old man in intensive care.
Peterhead man William ‘Bugsy’ Anderson sustained serious injuries after he was hit by a car on the town’s Queen Street at around 11.30pm on Friday, July 6.
Now, a number of councillors and business people have called for the part-pedestrianisation of Queen Street on Friday and Saturday nights in a bid to prevent further such accidents happening.
Commenting on the incident, chairman of Peterhead Pubwatch, Sandy Garvock told the Buchanie: “This is the third major accident I have seen on Queen Street in the last five or six years.
“On Friday and Saturday nights, the volume of people walking in the area is incredible and they don’t have the same sense of awareness.
“To make the street safer I would like to see the road closed on Friday and Saturday nights, between, say, 10pm and 5am.
“However, the street could still be open to taxis and for deliveries. In fact, a taxi rank could even be incorporated into the plan given that there would be reduced traffic.
“This truly has been an accident waiting to happen. I was there shortly after it happened and it was carnage”.
Meanwhile, Councillor Alan Gardiner gave his backing to the plan, stating: “We are all hoping that the young man who was involved in the crash pulls through very soon.
“I fully support the idea of Queen Street being partially-pedestrianised on Friday and Saturday nights, and I would like to see this happen as soon as possible.
“I have been in touch with Peterhead Community Council which has put the issue on its agenda.
“I have also spoken with Councillors Tom Malone and Alan Buchan, and they are also supportive of the idea”.
Community Council secretary Gordon Farman said it was important to first consult with local residents, although he admitted it was certainly one possible solution to the problem.
He told the Buchanie: “We had a meeting of the community council on Wednesday and we have agreed to contact Grampian Police and Aberdeenshire Council’s roads department to discuss the Queen Street proposal.
“There was certainly a broad understanding of why such a solution might be desirable.
“But first we’ve got to see if it is feasible and consult with local residents,” he added.
