Peterhead Sea Cadet Jake Strachan has scooped a national award from the Sea Cadets, being named as the top offshore cadet onboard T.S. Royalist for 2013. 15 year old Jake has won the Martin Henwood Memorial award, which is presented to the cadet who shows greatest endeavor during the year onboard the Sea Cadets Tall Ship T.S. Royalist.

The award is now in its third year and is selected by the staff of T.S. Royalist.

Jake’s first voyage onboard the training ship was in July this year when he sailed from Belfast to Oban. With 23 cadets from across the country onboard, the cadets were trained in all aspects of the ship’s routine during their voyage across the Irish Sea and then around the Inner Hebrides.

“One of the most memorable parts of the trip was the night sail from Jura to Colonsay, we anchored in a bay and got to go exploring on Colonsay the next day,” said Jake. After arriving home Jake had enjoyed his time onboard so much that he applied for a second trip onboard in November from Gosport around the south coast of England and the Isle of Wight. During this voyage they also got an insight into the new training ship being built to replace T.S. Royalist when they visited the University of Southampton to see the sail tests at the wind tunnel. Jake is delighted with his award and said he was speechless when he found out he had won the award. He was presented with a plaque from the crew of T.S. Royalist and as part of the award he also received an offshore bursary and he is now busy planning his next trip onboard Royalist in 2014.

Jake was presented with the Martin Henwood Memorial award trophy at the final uniformed parade of the year at T.S. Caledonia by Northern Area’s Senior Staff Officer Commander Ian Wilson.
