STAFF at Clever Tots Nursery in Peterhead have worked on a number of improvements since HM inspectors first visited in June 2010.

A follow-up report from HM Inspectorate revealed that children were beginning to learn and achieve better and across the nursery, most children were motivated and settled well to their chosen activity.

Inspectors noted that babies continued to enjoy a wider range of sensory activities, including items in their treasure baskets, while children in the toddlers’ room were confident and growing in independence.

The report stated: “Throughout the playroom the environment for learning has improved.

“It is calm and purposeful and is now having a more positive impact on children’s learning.

“Staff now involve children in planning some of their own learning by, for example, asking them what they know about the Diamond Jubilee. However, children should still be involved more fully in planning and evaluating aspects of their own learning.”

The inspectors said that in the three to five room, staff should now take steps to increase opportunities for literacy and numeracy through play in the playroom and outdoors.

“Staff know children well and are now better aware of their needs and interests,” says the report.

It also said that transition arrangements are improving with a greater exchange of information among staff and parents. Staff are aware these arrangements could be developed further.

“Since the inspection in June 2010 there has been a significant change in staff. This has resulted in a lack of consistency in children’s experiences.

“The managers have put in place some strategies to monitor the work of the nursery. These are very much at the early stage of development.

“Staff still need to develop and implement a rigorous system of monitoring and self-evaluation to ensure real improvements in practice happen.

“Overall, staff observations of children’s learning are now more effective and beginning to lear into the next steps of learning.”

Commenting on the follow-up report, nursery co-owner, Sheila Cruickshank said: “We have been working hard and we are pleased with the report.

“The nursery is going from strength to strength and we will continue to improve.”
