North East MSP Christian Allard has praised the work of Lab in a Lorry during a visit to the mobile science laboratory at Mintlaw Academy recently.

Mr Allard had the opportunity to see the great work of everyone involved when Lab in a Lorry arrived at Mintlaw Academy on Monday.

The SNP MSP spoke of the importance of getting students interested in science and engineering through hands-on experiments that they can experience at the Lab.

Lab in a Lorry was co-founded by the Institute of Physics and the Schlumberger Foundation in 2004 to give young people the opportunity to be inspired by science.

Commenting, Mr Allard said: “Lab in a Lorry is a fantastic opportunity for young people to come and learn about science and engineering. It is a particularly useful tool for demonstrating how these technical subjects can be appealing to girls as well as boys.

“Many of the students I met were very enthusiastic and it was great to see them thinking positively about a future in a scientific discipline.

“The energy sector in the North East is booming and as a result there is currently a skills shortage. Initiatives like this mobile lab will inspire students to think about a career in science and engineering and help provide the industry with a stronger local skills base.

“I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the staff and volunteers that are making this project a success.”

Lab in a Lorry is a partnership between the Institute of Physics, OPITO, the Scottish Government and the Schlumberger Foundation with support from the Rank Prize Funds, ConocoPhillips and Marathon. The Scottish Government has contributed £22,000 to the Lab which will assist in enabling it to operate throughout the country in 2014.
