A SCOTTISH Government Minister has visited Banff and Buchan College.
Minister for Youth Employment Angela Constance made the trip to highlight the college’s efforts in helping young people into employment.
During the visit, Ms Constance met principal Paul Sherrington and toured the new college building.
The Minister also met some of the students who have taken part in the New College Learning Programme, which aims to help young people to get their first job.
Commenting, Ms Constance said: “The New College Learning Programme is focused on improving people’s employability, especially young people who need some extra help in finding that route into a job.
“This new scheme has given colleges greater flexibility in meeting learners’ needs and Banff and Buchan have responded by offering 121 young people a place in the programme, giving them additional skills and experience and ensuring they’re better placed to take up a job opportunity.
“It is vital colleges continue to make every effort to give young people these opportunities and maximise the number of course places available.”
Ms Constance added: “I started my day in Aberdeen at an Oil and Gas UK Education summit. While I was in the area, I was very keen to visit to find out about the College Learning Programme because I’d heard the college was doing good things with the programme.
“The new college building is absolutely fantastic. As well as the building being fresh and innovative, what has impressed me the most is the calibre of the young people. The new College Learning Programme is part of a £13m investment across Scotland, and it’s great to see Banff and Buchan College make good use of that fund. It is clear this college course is having a really positive impact in helping people enter into employment.”
Banff and Buchan College principal Paul Sherrington commented: “We’re delighted to have the Minister here today.
“She was very interested in the work of the college, especially the challenges we face, and the opportunities college courses bring.”
