Minimal disruption for residents vows Skanska

PETERHEAD residents living near the site of the new HMP & YOI Grampian were invited to discuss the details of the project with main contractor Skanska and the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) recently.
The meeting was chaired by William Sinclair, SPS project sponsor, with project director Gareth Jacques attending on behalf of Skanska.
Around 25 members of the local community were present on the night, with the main aim to answer residents’ questions and discuss any concerns they might have about the building of this new facility.
Skanska summarised current progress and addressed various issues raised:
Those attending were told that the perimeter wall panels and security fence are now 99% complete and internal fit-out works were progressing within all buildings.
The superstructure works were now complete, while the gatehouse building is at its maximum height – no additional floors are to be built.
Landscaping works will commence in April.
With regards to traffic movements, Skanska told residents that it would remind all delivery drivers not to use the South Road entrance which is for cars, light vans and staff only.
The firm will also get an update from Scottish Water regarding the installation date for a new water main.
Some residents expressed concerns regarding cracks to the external render on their homes and Skanska has agreed to inspect these occurrences and share its findings.
The Skanska team working on the HMP & YOI Grampian project achieved the Considerate Contractor Performance Beyond Compliance Award in 2012.
The team used its skills and expertise to work with the local community on projects like refurbishing Burnhaven School’s toilets and providing local apprentices and college students with valuable work experience on site.
SPS confirmed that: “Skanska had provided more community benefits than any other contractor that has worked on SPS projects.”
Evidence of this is the positive press Skanska has received in local newspapers.
Commenting, Mr Jacques said: “This is a big project situated in the centre of a local community.
“The team is always thinking of ways to work with residents to avoid any disruption.
“However, we don’t always get it right and I would like to take this opportunity to apologise for some late-night working just before Christmas.
“We couldn’t avoid this, but in hindsight it could have been communicated better.
“I would like to confirm this work is complete and we don’t expect any more late- night working.”
Skanska is planning to complete the remaining construction work with as little disruption as possible to local residents.
They added that a regular newsletter will be distributed to keep residents up to date with progress on the project and any matters which may affect them.
