Help us Light up Peterhead says group
A VOLUNTARY Peterhead group is seeking help in raising cash to light up the town this Christmas.
The Light Up Peterhead Committee is a small group of six members who have, over the past three years, worked hard to improve the annual festive lights display.
Initial fundraising paid for a complete overhaul of the electrical infrastructure of the lights, and now the group is aiming to raise cash to provide new displays for the town.
Vice-chair of the group, Rev. James McMillan, told the Buchanie that fundraising had becoming more and more difficult over the past couple of years and now hoped the community could help.
“We have had electrical points installed to make the provision of lights easier and all the wire ropes that support the lights have been renewed.
“As well as this, every lamp and every cross street light have been renovated and re-strung with energy efficient lights.
“Last year we purchased new lamp post lights for Queen Street and because of the considerable generosity of our churches we have a new cross street light for Queen Street to be seen this Christmas.”
Rev. McMillan says this year it was hoped to buy a further four new cross street lights for Queen Street but this cost was beyond the group’s means this year.
“Each year we need to find £7,000 to insure the lights, to pay for storage and the hire of equipment to install them and, of course, the cost of electricians to put them up and take them down.
“We receive no funding from the council to assist us with this and the committee has to raise this money through fundraising and direct donations.
“The cost of a cross street light is £1,500 and we also need more people on our committee which is a very small group.
“If anyone is interested in joining us we would be glad to hear from them.
“Meanwhile, if there are any local businesses who would like to donate a light, we would also be delighted.
“We hope that folk will appreciated the work that is being done to help celebrate Christmas in Peterhead,” he added.
