Hatton bridge repair works finally begin

The ongoing work at Hatton Bridge

The ongoing work at Hatton Bridge

WORK on a Hatton bridge, decimated in storms at the end of last year, got underway yesterday (Monday).

Peterhead South & Cruden councillors Stephen Smith and Stuart Pratt were advised by Aberdeenshire Council that work on site to provide access by means of a temporary bridge to part of Hatton, which has been cut off to traffic since Christmas, is now underway.

It is expected that a temporary bridge – which will require a temporary road access to be constructed in the neighbouring field - will be open within six weeks.

The resultant road closure has cut off a large part of the village to road traffic although pedestrian access was restored within two working days.

Gas and water mains and electricity cables running under and alongside the collapsed bridge have delayed progress on the site.

Commenting following further discussions with Aberdeenshire Council’s director of infrastructure Stephen Archer, Cllr Pratt said: “I’m pleased that Aberdeenshire Council are finally in a position to have works starting on the ground.

“While I appreciate that there was a need for a considerable amount of behind-the-scenes work to get to this position, people in Hatton have been suffering a lot of inconvenience due to the diversions in place. I hope that the works can be carried out as quickly as possible to restore road access to the affected part of the village.”

Cllr Smith added: “This is good news. There is no doubt that local people have been hugely inconvenienced by the detours involved, particularly during periods of bad weather, as the roads used are not used to such volumes of traffic.

“My hope now is for the works to be completed as soon as possible and allow access to be restored to the village.”
