Hatton bridge must be made a top priority vow councillors
The visible damage caused to Hatton Farm Road due to the high level of water created over the weekend
Peterhead South and Cruden councillors Stephen Smith and Stuart Pratt held a meeting with Aberdeenshire Council Director of Infrastructure Stephen Archer on Monday, to seek assurances that replacement of the flood damaged Hatton Bridge would be a top priority for the council.
The resultant road closure has cut off a large part of the village to road traffic although pedestrian access was restored by means of a temporary bridge.
Following the meeting Cllr Smith said: “The provision of a temporary vehicle bridge is being investigated and discussions will take place with adjoining landowners in this regard. At this stage, the council cannot say whether this will be possible, but it is under investigation.”
Cllr Pratt added: “Discussions are taking place with gas and electricity companies as the mains pipelines and cables will need to be relocated. We’ve received assurances that this will be done on a planned basis and communicated to users in good time.
“Better signage will be put in place advising of the road closure/diversions on the northern approach to Hatton and the diversion route will be given higher priority in terms of gritting during wintry weather.”
In a letter to the Buchanie, Hatton resident Dave Blair said: “A section of the street culvert collapsed after the burn was in spate and someone within Aberdeenshire Council has decided it is not a priority repair.
“They have instructed us to drive over four miles of unclassified roads that are in a really bad state, just to get to the shop or doctor’s surgery.”
“The last communication we had from the council said that it may take six to nine months for the road to be repaired. Unbelievable.”
