Harry Potter stars make Buchan their home

TWO stars of the first Harry Potter film have taken up residence residing in the heart of rural Buchan.

But it won't be Harry, Ron or Hermione you will be running into nearby.

A set of kennels near Brucklay are now home to magnificent birds of prey, two of which that have famed backgrounds for appearing in the first Harry Potter film, as Hedwig and Errol.

Errol, the great horned owl, found fame in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone as the bird who delivered the first letter to Harry telling him all about the wonders of Hogwarts.

Hedwig, on the other hand, played Harry's personal owl in the first film. This snowy owl was chosen to feature in the film because it is a lighter weight than female snowy owls and was easier for the actor to carry.

Kennel owner Ruth Hickling, who is actually a qualified social worker, is letting all her birds of prey, including Harry Potter's owls, be of use to adults and children with learning difficulties.

She has created a company withthis very aim since many of the birds are said to be theraputic for people with autism or the ADHD condition.

The social enterprise, The Owl and the Pussycat Centre, is on hand to provide a calming and theraputic retreat for people who have learning difficulties.

The non-profitable company has recently secured 4,000 in funding from First Port, an organisation that awards funding to social enterprise projects.

Ruth Hickling said: "We are hoping that people who visit the Owl and Pussycat Centre find that the owls are calming. I've always been interested in birds of prey and this combines my social work experience and love of animals. It is just hoped that people who visit have an enjoyable experience."

A minimum of two people can visit the centre for 35 each, or a family ticket is 10 per child with a minimum of two adults paying full price.
