First class delivery from ‘postie’ Eilidh Whiteford

BANFF and Buchan MP Eilidh Whiteford donned a Royal Mail high visibility waistcoat on Friday as she spent the morning on a special delivery round with a local postie.

Dr. Whiteford was visiting the Royal Mail’s Kirk Street depot in Peterhead on a fact-finding mission to discover more about the work of the postmen and women based there.

After a brief tour of the facilities, Dr. Whiteford headed out to the town centre with postie Gregg Buttler to deliver the mail to the town centre shops and homes.

Gregg has been a postman for the past eight years and gave Dr. Whiteford an insight into his daily routine.

Dr. Whiteford was accompanied on the delivery round by Peterhead councillor Stephen Smith and delivery office manager Garry Saunders.

She handed out a number of letters and parcels, including a deliver for Something Special in Marischal Street, where she enjoyed a chat with owner, Ian Sutherland.

Commenting on her delivery round, Dr. Whiteford said: “Postmen and women perform an incredibly important function in our communities, not just delivering communication, but being one of the institutions in society that binds us together for the common good.

“I am very grateful to local postman Gregg Butcher who delivers to customers in Peterhead for letting me join him on his round in the town centre.

“Gregg was very tolerant of the intrusion into his job and it was a pleasure to work alongside him on part of his daily route,” she added.
