A PETERHEAD primary school has paid tribute to a “lively and vibrant” pupil who tragically lost his battle with leukaemia.
Seven-year-old Scott Harris was diagnosed with the illness shortly before Christmas last year.
Sadly, intensive treatment at Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital proved unsuccessful and the primary two pupil passed away in February.
Now staff and pupils at Dales Park Primary School have unveiled ‘Scott’s Space’ - a special playground area complete with colourful seating and a garden to mark the spot where Scott liked to play.
Colourful fish decorate a wall behind a group of red benches, paying tribute to Scott’s love of fishing.
Scott’s mum Lesley Latta and sisters Claire (6) and Dawn (18) opened the area on Tuesday, as Scott’s friends, teachers and classmates looked on.
Mrs Latta said: “Scott’s Space used to be just an empty corner of the playground. But that was where Scott liked to play at break times.
“He also loved to go fishing so the coloured fish on the wall are a nice touch. We had ‘gone fishing’ inscribed on his headstone.”
“Staff and pupils at the school have worked really hard on the space. They have really done Scott proud.”
Hi mum, of Berryden Road in Peterhead, said that it had been a “rough time” for the family but she appreciated effortsmade by the school to honour her son’s memory.
She added: “Scott had actually gone into remission shortly before he passed away so it was a bit of a schock. We are moving forward now. There is nothing more we can do.”
Tuesday’s unveiling of ‘Scott’s Space’ was “respectful and low key” as many of the school’s children had been “very upset” by Scott’s passing.
Headteacher Ann Falconer said that Scott was “sadly missed” by pupils and staff.
She said: “Scott was a lively and vibrant boy. We all have fond memories of him. He will be sadly missed by staff and pupils.”
A memorial plaque will be added to ‘Scott’s Space’ in the coming days.
