Crimond pupils host launch of TOTAL Green School Awards
Crimond School hosted the local launch of this year’s TOTAL Green School Awards.
The environmental competition, where the winning entry can win up to £5,000, is open to all UK schools for children aged five to 11.
Pupils from primary one, two and three at Crimond primary have demonstrated excellent entrepreneur skills within their TOTAL Green School Awards submission as their ‘Natural Play’ project takes shape.
The three classes have worked together in contacting the Crimond Learning Community and local businesses to gather unwanted materials that they could recycle and use to re-energise an unused area within the playground.
The materials would have otherwise ended up in landfill sites. Drain pipes, guttering, rope, tarpaulin and even a boat have been donated to the school making the area a place the children can play imaginatively.
Crimond primary has engaged the entire school in their second project ‘Foodie Friday’. Aware that healthy eating and exercise are central to lifelong health and wellbeing the pupils have been growing, preparing, serving and tasting all sorts of foods.
Each week a class provides a healthy snack for the other children using the produce grown in the school garden. Culinary delights ranging from stir fry, fruit kebabs, and stovies have all been on the menu. In addition, the children take part in aerobics, dance and exercise as part of ‘Foodie Friday’ helping to make this the school’s favourite day of the week.
The aim of the competition is to generate interest, amongst young people, in the environment and to raise awareness of the need for sustainable energy sources. It is run by the Young People’s Trust for the Environment (YPTE) and supported by TOTAL.
Peter Littlewood, Director of YPTE said: “‘I am really impressed with the excellent work that is taking place at Crimond Primary School. It’s so important that young people learn about how to take care of the environment. It’s through developing that interest and knowledge that we’ll produce future generations of more environmentally responsible adults. “
