Crime rates lowest for nearly a decade
Grampian Police has released figures which reveal crime rates across the region have fallen to their lowest in almost a decade.
The statistics detail how local policing teams have helped slash the number of community crimes, with violent offences being slashed by 21.6% from the 2010/11 figure to a nine-year low. This includes drops in the number of robberies (15.8%) and serious assault charges (13.5%).
The annual figure for vandalisms is also at its lowest in nine years, with the recorded figure of 5935 26.8% below the recorded figure from 2003/04.
Chief Constable Colin McKerracher said: “These results are obviously extremely encouraging and once again highlight the value of our local policing teams to the communities of Grampian.
“The presence of officers within the community has helped prevent and detect offences within their communities and this is clearly reflected in the latest figures. It has also allowed us to work more closely with the public and our partners across the North East in dealing with the local issues that matter most.”
The force has also welcomed increases in detection rates for a number of crimes with officers reporting violent offenders to the Procurator Fiscal in 83.6% of cases – a 3.4% improvement on the previous year and the highest detection rate achieved in the last 9 years.
For sexual offences, detection rates increased sharply in the final quarter of 2011/12 to 68.7%, the highest since quarter four in 2009/10. The annual detection rate is 60.9%, an improvement of 2.2% from last year.
And for vehicle crime detection rates have increased from 95.1% to 96.9% during 2011/12.
“We are determined to drive on and deliver even better results in what will ultimately be the final year of Grampian Police as an entity. The hard work and dedication of our officers will remain as we strive to ensure that Grampian continues to be one of the safest areas in the country,” added Mr McKerracher.
“As we move towards a single Scottish police force, the excellent progress that we have made year after year will be our legacy.”
