Students from the Early Education and Childcare Higher course at Banff and Buchan College have become qualified to deliver Bookbug sessions across playgroups in Aberdeenshire.

The Bookbug programme is a Scottish Government Initiative designed to promote literacy in the early years of childhood.

Lecturer Jan Skyner said: “The class first came across Bookbug during a visit to our local library as part of their Language, Literacy and Numeracy Unit.

“The students were so impressed with the fun, interaction and learning involved in the Bookbug sessions that they wanted to find out if they could somehow become involved.”

She continues: “On approaching the Early Years Library Development Department within Aberdeenshire Libraries, we were thrilled to be offered the opportunity of becoming trained in Bookbug by Susan McKay, the Early Years Librarian. The training has been successfully completed and each student can now run a 30 to 40 minutes session for baby, toddler or primary 1 groups operating within the community. It is a great way of building confidence and communication skills in our students.”

Student Sarah Murray has already delivered her first Bookbug session in Boddam, and commented: “It went really well. The children really enjoyed it because it involved songs, stories and rhymes. I can’t wait to do the next one”.

Bookbug Sessions are free, fun and friendly events for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and their families to enjoy together. The sessions are widely available and are generally held in libraries or other community venues, so they are also a good way to meet other parents and children. They help build confidence and social skills in children and assist with speech and language development.
