Call to reconsider Cruden Bay bridge fate

Aberdeenshire Council is recommending that Bishop's Bridge be closed to traffic.

Aberdeenshire Council is recommending that Bishop's Bridge be closed to traffic.

A former Peterhead councillor has called on Aberdeenshire Council to reconsider plans to close an historic bridge at Cruden Bay.

Sam Coull has suggested the council install sleeping policemen at Bishop’s Bridge rather than close it to traffic.

The bridge was substantially damaged following a spate of recent accidents and a public consultation on a proposed prohibition of driving order is now under way.

But Mr Coull says: “I’m sure the council isn’t insensitive to the inconvenience and additional journey time which will be involved for regular bridge users coming from the rural west of Cruden Bay to visit either of the two graveyards, attend the churches or go down into the village itself.

“The closure of the bridge to vehicular traffic seems to be an extreme measure when ‘sleeping policemen’ would probably be a very effective measure,” he added.
