LIFEBOAT CREWMEN RECOVER THE CAR WHICH ENTERED PETERHEAD HARBOUR. (DUNCAN BROWN)

A body has been recovered from Peterhead harbour after a vehicle went into the water earlier this morning.

Police Scotland have confirmed that a man has died and that the next of kin have been informed.

One man dived into the water to help after the vehicle crashed through the chain fence but was unable to rescue the driver.

Police officers were quickly joined by teams from the fire and rescue service, the coastguard and a lifeboat crew.

The Buchanie understands the incident took place just before 9am.

Roads surrounding the harbour were closed during the recovery but have now reopened.

Enquiries into the incident are at an early stage and anyone who may have seen the vehicle prior to the incident is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.
