Bikers rally round to help charity

a CHARITY supporting the emergency services has received a boost from hundreds of pounds in donations from North-east motorcyclists.
Generous bikers rallied together at the Grampian Motorcycle Convention in Alford last month and contributed £440 for the organisation, Grampian Immediate Care Scheme (GICS).
GICS is a voluntary group of health professionals including doctors, nurses, and first aiders, who attend to patients with life-threatening illnesses or injuries when called on for assistance by the Scottish Ambulance Service.
Dr Mark Bloch, a GICS volunteer and an NHS Grampian consultant anaesthetist, said: “The teamwork shown by those in GICS in the North-east, in what are often very difficult situations, is exceptional and often means the difference between life or death for the casualties involved, particularly during road crashes.”
“This donation is most welcome and will be used to continue running educational evenings for our GICS volunteers in Grampian. Some 80 health professionals attend these evenings in their own time to train in topics ranging from initial care for critically ill or injured patients, to managing the scene of a major incident.”
A police initiative is under way in the North-east to reduce the number of collisions involving motorcyclists.
Constable Neil Robertson, of Road Safety Grampian through which the money was raised, said: “We are continuing to work with our partner agencies in a bid to reduce collisions within the biking community.
“A serious collision can be devastating for all involved, including the families, friends and the wider local community.
“By working together with groups such as GICS, we can help reduce the devastation caused by road collisions.
“As part of this effort, I strongly urge motorcyclists to improve their skills and safety by participating in further training.
“Grampian Police will continue to host ‘Bikesafe’ courses throughout the North-east and there are a number of motorcycle training providers who also provide advanced or refresher training.”
