Arts at Peterhead Academy

Waiting for Video...

It has been a busy term in Peterhead Academy Creative Arts Faculty.

Back in November, 37 third year pupils travelled to Aberdeen Arts Centre to perform their interpretation of Romeo & Juliet in the Shakespeare Schools Festival.

It involved months of textual analysis, line learning, character development and team work.

The pupils rehearsed with professional theatre technicians in the morning then, during the break in the afternoon, went to visit His Majesty’s Theatre and enjoyed a backstage tour of this magnificent venue.

Then in the evening they presented their production to a full house which was full of praise for these young thespians. To round off the evening they watched other schools perform their creations. A day steeped in theatricality but not one drama queen among them!

Later in November, singers from the music department took part in the BBC Children In Need Choir. The commitment required to, initially audition for this huge televised event, then to travel to Aberdeen for six rehearsals and the final event proved the enthusiasm and passion our pupils have for performing.

To sing with other young people from around the nation at such a worthwhile event was a considerable honour for the pupils and one where they conducted themselves with decorum and flair.

Mid-December saw Peterhead Academy’s art & design department present its inaugural art exhibition, ‘A Change of Art’. Around 200 pupils from S3 to S6 worked extremely hard during class time and in after-school study groups, to develop their design skills using creativity and experimentation.

The evening was a great success with more than 300 local people visiting the exhibition.

Music was provided at this by the string quartet adding to the atmosphere of inspiration.

The academy hopse to make this an annual event to ensure our young people have the opportunity to showcase their talents outwith the confines of the art department.

Finally, the annual Christmas Concert was held in mid-December - providing an evening of festive entertainments which included choir, orchestra, string quartet, ceilidh band and soloists to round off a very hectic term in the arts at the academy.
