Former Peterhead skipper and author Peter Duncan handed over a cheque for £2,320 to Peterhead’s Relay for Life recently.
The cash was raised after Peter’s daughter, Jennifer Duncan Wood, successfully completed this year’s London Marathon, with a further £2,000 having already been pledged to Cancer Research UK.
Peter, and brother Andrew, have raised in the region of £20,000 for the charity over the past couple of years through writing their popular memoirs from their days at sea.
The books have been sold the length and breadth of the country, such is their popularity.
However, Jennifer decided that her dad, who has been fighting cancer for the past three years, deserved a break and took over the fundraising reins.
“I thought dad needed a break from writing the book in 2014,” said Jennifer.
“Last April he became really ill and my way of coping was running, so I said I would raise some money this year by doing the London Marathon, giving him a few months away from writing. He handed over the reins to me and I was happy to do it for dad,” she said.
Jennifer set up a Just Giving page and her total was £4,320, with £2,000 going to Cancer Research UK via the marathon, and the rest going to the Peterhead branch of Relay for Life.
She completed the 26-mile course in four hours and 16 minutes, despite suffering from injury and having been advised not to run by her doctor.
“This was my very first marathon and I took about five weeks off afterwards, but now I’m struggling to get going again,” she said.
“I am very grateful for the support I received in fundraising and the encouragement I had to complete the marathon.”
Relay for Life chairman, Lorraine Coleman, congratulated Jennifer on her efforts saying it had been an “incredible achievement”.
“It take a lot of effort to do a marathon, but the fact that she was doing it for her dad and other cancer sufferers is fantastic,” she said. “I’d like to thank her very much for this exceptionally generous donation.”
This year’s Peterhead Relay for Life will be held at the town’s Catto Park on Saturday, July 5, at 11am. If you would like further information, or to enter a team, call Lorraine on 07928342619.
