Heritage Society appeal for sports stories

THE FAMILY History Society of Buchan is appealing to members of the public for stories and photographs of local sporting heroes.

The Society are busy planning next year’s Scottish Week exhibition, which will showcase Buchan’s sporting achievements to coincide with the Olympic Games in London, and are keen to hear from anyone whose relatives or ancestors may have been involved with national or international competitive sports.

Society Chairman Alan Fakley said that the Society has already had a good response from members of the public as folk had dropped in past the Broad Street office with old sporting photographs and tit bits of information.

He said: “People have been dropping into the centre with their old photographs. We have had about 150 sporting photographs donated.”

Most photographs feature Buchan football teams stretching from the 1920s to the 1970s but rugby, cricket and bowling memories have also surfaced.

Alan, along with Society President Anne Allan and Centre Manager Rita Gordon, have been working to create hard copies of digital photo albums to encourage Buchan folk to visit and try to name some of the unknown athletes in the pictures.

Alan added: “We received a photograph of a mystery football team a few weeks ago. After it featured in The Buchanie, we discovered that it was the North School former pupils team and were able to identify every player.”

Photographs from the old harbour baths in the 1960s as well as Fraserburgh’s ‘Toolies’ football team and Peterhead’s Cross & Blackwells Dynamos have also emerged. The Society aim to offer a more personal genealogy service than can be accessed online or through libraries.

Alan explained: “Websites such as ancestry.com offer access to censuses and some parish records but we want to be able to tell people a bit more about what their ancestors were like as people and what they did, instead of just their names and dates of birth.”

He added: “We are really keen to hear from anyone with stories of Buchan sporting greatness. We have already heard about someone who swam for Scotland but we would love to hear more.”

All photographs will be scanned and returned immediately to owners.
