Council contests woman’s sewage leak step concerns

A young mother from Peterhead is waiting for Aberdeenshire Council to repair a dangerous sewage leak from under the steps outside her council flat after years of complaints.

Aberdeenshire Council has responded to claims that steps outside a block of Peterhead council flats are dangerous.

Last week the Buchan Observer website reported that a pregnant woman has made several complaints to the local authorities about a ‘sewage leak’ outside her flat.

But a council spokesman has said that what looks like a leak is actually white efflorescence.

This happens when salts leech from cement but is not at all dangerous

Jodie Aitken, 21, and other residents of 61 Crossfolds Crescent, Peterhead, had repeatedly asked the council to fix the problem

As icy conditions set in Miss Aitken, who is pregnant with her second child, was worried about slipping on the steps.

She said: “With the recent frost that there’s been, I’ve slipped.

“I’ve fallen before and some of my neighbours have slipped hard. Fortunately we’ve got a grit box at the end of the path.

“One of these days someone’s going to fall and seriously injure themselves.”

Work has recently been done on the adjoining path and the spokesman said none of the contractors noticed a sewage problem.

The spokesman also said that the salt from the cement should actually prevent ice.

The recent works were the result of damage done due to missing guttering from the front of the block.

Miss Aitken said: “The guttering also hasn’t been fixed for three years but the gutters aren’t above the steps. I don’t think it’s just water. It stinks in the heat of summer and you can tell it’s not just rain.

“They lifted the front path, I said to them though that it was a waste of money - it’s the steps that are the problem.”

The council are aware of the missing guttering and are attempting to contact the private owner to agree to part-share the cost of repairs.
