The annual Giving Tree appeal has been launched at Morrisons in Peterhead following the success of the initiative last year.
Simon Bedford, who is Peterhead’s Social Regeneration Development Officer with the Here For You Project, met with Sheena Irvine, Morrisons Community Champion, and Donna Geddes, Customer Services Assistant, to launch this year’s appeal at the store.
Customers at Morrisons who wish to participate can now pick a tag off the Giving Tree, with the age and gender of a child on each tag.
Customers can then buy a gift suitable for a child in that age group and then hand it in to the Customer Service Desk in Morrisons in Peterhead.
The gifts will then be passed to the Here For You Project and partners for distribution, ready to be given to local families.
As well as Morrisons, other outlets supporting the scheme include Asda, Peterhead Community Centre, Peterhead Library, The Hotspot, The Happy Plant Gift and Garden Centre at Mintlaw and Maud Resource Centre as well as Peterhead’s Salvation Army, Old Parish Church, Apex Centre, the Congregational Church and Shell UK at St Fergus.
Community Champion Sheena Irvine said: “It was very successful last year, the donations that came in from our very generous customers and I’d just like to let everybody know the Gift Tree is up and ready for this year’s appeal.”
Mr Bedford commented: “This project in previous years has witnessed overwhelming generosity from our community and I am hopeful that this year will be no different.
“Members of the public are being asked to select a tag from one of our trees then buy just one extra gift during their Christmas shopping up to the value of £10 be it a toy, book, game, toiletries or local business gift card for vulnerable children.
“We would also encourage local people to donate non-perishable food items and other items from the list appearing at our tree hosts for the provision of hampers to those most in need.”
