Four generations of a Mitchell family who are currently based in Texas, USA made a nostalgic visit to Peterhead recently.

They are descendants of Alexander Mitchell, (son of George Mitchell and Isabella Keith), who was born on the farm of Collielaw on June 2 1863 and who emigrated firstly to Montreal, Canada before moving to Boston, Massachussets USA and then to Texas state.

Alexander married Mary Elizabeth Corder on February 6 1907 in Sanderson, Texas and they had four children.

The oldest was Alvin born in 1907 who died in infancy, followed by Noah Malone (1909), Cecil (1912) and George Keith (1913).

The Mitchells who visited Peterhead are descended from the Noah Malone Mitchell line.

Through the good offices of the Family History Society of Buchan, the family were able to meet with some Mitchell family relatives still living in the Peterhead area - the oldest being George Mitchell who was the last Mitchell to farm at Collielaw.

Much chin wagging took place over lunch which was followed by a stroll around the older part of the town and the harbour to see where the Mitchell ancestors would have spent their time in town.

All too soon the parting of the ways had to come and the Mitchells had to set off for Aberdeen to continue on their planned schedule of visits.

The Mitchell’s stopover in Peterhead will be long remembered by all, with very fond memories of a rather special occasion.
