A MAN was airlifted to hospital on Thursday following an accident.

The unnamed man, believed to be a fisherman, allegedly fell into the harbour while working on the quayside.

It is understood that he sustained head injuries.

Peterhead Lifeboat was called to the scene shortly before 1pm, and stood by while the man was treated by Paramedics and then airlifted to hospital in Aberdeen.

A Spokesman for RNLI said: “The RNLI Peterhead Lifeboat was called at 12.59 pm on Thursday 31 May 2012 to an incident of a casualty who had fallen into Peterhead harbour.”

“The casualty was recovered from the harbour prior to the lifeboat arriving on scene. The lifeboat stood by until the injured casualty was airlifted to hospital from the quayside. The lifeboat, and its volunteer crew returned to its berth, at 2.00 pm.”
