The third Fireworks Against Cancer event at New Deer Show Ground has been hailed a success with over £4,000 raised.

This year’s event was held in aid of the UCAN urological cancer support charity based at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary on Saturday, October 22.

There was perfect weather and great support from a host of street food traders and a good humoured crowd of over 3,000 people who enjoyed a fantastic evening’s entertainment.

Buchan Community Radio were a great addition to the event and host DJ Ronnie Arthur kept the crowds amused with a great selection of music and fun.

The firework section of the evening included a super Son & Lumière production of complementary music with this year’s theme based on orchestral and vocal gaming music, enjoyed and recognised by all age groups.

Hot drinks, fish & chips, burgers, cakes, confectionery & doughnuts, plus lots of glow toys were all on sale throughout the event with profits from the traders all contributing to the final total.

As darkness fell, the gathering crowds were entertained by the impressive Aberdeen University Circus Arts & Fire Skills Society with fire juggling, fire eating and some great fire inspired circus magic.

This year the addition of three fun fair rides courtesy of Spencer’s proved really popular and plans are already under way for an extension of early afternoon entertainment along with a bigger presence of trade stalls and activities to maintain the event’s popularity.

Miss Grampian Galaxy Emma Watson was on hand to ensure the countdown went to plan.

The event is run entirely on sponsorship so that all donations can go directly to the UCAN fund.

John Burdon spokesman for Fireworks Against Cancer said: “We had a terrific turnout again this year and in total we raised £4,117.97 and one smiley supermarket trolley token!

“The evening is now firmly established as a calendar event and we look forward to meeting visitors old and new at the next firework spectacular on October 21, 2017.

“In three years the event has raised over £10,000 for UCAN, a big thank you to everyone once again.

“Anyone interested in helping at the event, with event sponsorship and associate sponsorship, or general comments to improve and expand the activities during the evening can contact us at www.fireworksagainstcancer.org.”
